About Sai Institute of Rural Development (SIRD)
The Sai Institute of Rural Development (SIRD), Varanasi is an ICT-enabled Research and Development (R&D) Knowledge Institute dedicated to promoting rural innovation, women entrepreneurship, value-added products, skill development and technology-enabled livelihood opportunities. The institute works towards integrating traditional knowledge, modern technology and local resources to create sustainable livelihood models for rural communities.
The concept and early initiatives of SIRD were developed and implemented since 2009 in association with its parent organization Yuva Gramya Vikas Samiti (YGVS). YGVS is a registered society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). During this period, SIRD functioned under the management committee framework of YGVS, implementing various initiatives related to rural development, women empowerment, agriculture-based entrepreneurship and technology dissemination.
Over the years, SIRD has focused on technology-enabled livelihood promotion in areas such as agriculture, food processing, handicrafts, health, education and rural entrepreneurship. The institute has collaborated with several leading national research and technology institutions to implement development and technology dissemination programmes. These collaborations include institutions such as Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Digital India Corporation, and the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
SIRD promotes ICT-based solutions, skill development, enterprise creation and innovation-driven livelihoods for rural communities, particularly women and Self-Help Groups (SHGs). The institute aims to enable rural women and youth to establish enterprises based on local resources, traditional skills and modern technologies.
The institute has been founded by a dedicated team of professionals with extensive experience in the public sector, academia, social development and private industry. This team is committed to applying their knowledge and expertise to accelerate the pace of rural development and build sustainable community-based enterprises.
SIRD works on the principle of collaborative research and knowledge partnerships, focusing on developing appropriate, sustainable and culturally relevant technologies and integrating them into the daily lives of rural communities. Through the promotion of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and digital awareness, the institute seeks to empower rural populations and facilitate innovation in the evolving digital era.
With the expansion of its activities, increasing collaborations with national institutions and the growing need for an independent institutional framework, the Sai Institute of Rural Development (SIRD) was formally established as a separate legal entity. Accordingly, on 5 August 2025, SIRD was registered in Varanasi as a Non-Profit Trust under Section 20 of the Indian Trusts Act, 1882.
Since then, SIRD has been functioning as an autonomous knowledge and innovation institute, committed to advancing rural innovation, women-led entrepreneurship and technology-driven inclusive development in India.
